Chapter 8
____________________________________________
As he entered the night-club, he looked left and right for acquaintances. It was not worth it drinking alone. He thought that in order of standards, the high density beer hall was the lowest in ranking followed by the high density bottle store. Then followed the high density night-clubs and restaurants before the list peaked at the light density night clubs and their compatriot night clubs in the outskirts of the city. These were well maintained and their products including the ladies of the night were expensive. Their clientele was that of the big fish that prowled large financial waters for salaries and allowances.
After all the reason why men went to gents clubs and beer halls was for the company. He was heading for a rack of game machines when he heard one of many whistles. He looked around. A familiar cape was being waved at him. Three familiar faces were sitting around a table looking at him. They appeared like a troop of chacma baboons jealously guarding a maize field, which they had been raiding against a lone male headed for the same field.
The sight of familiar faces made him change territory. He calculated his azimuth before heading for the table weaving through groups of revellers. One man gave way for him. His eyes were bloodshot. He looked at Thomas as he passed. He raised his hand holding a cigarette.
“Han’ila imatches tshomi,” he said to Thomas breathing out smoke.
“No sweat jida,” replied Thomas.
As he reached the table, a fourth chair had been arranged. The beacon that had guided him had been replaced on one head upside down. His cape was also won upside down.
"Hi Thomas," the young man who had waved the cape shook hands with him briskly. It showed they were good chums. “I saw the reflection of your face in our neighbour’s tables because there is a guy wearing spectacles.”
"Tommy boy what gives?"
"A game of poker, a smoke and a drink is all that gives," said the young man.
"Hi T."
"We were missing your wise cracks. We were sort of growing tired of looking at each other. First there was Thompson and myself here just drinking. Oswald joined later and now you. We are a gang now, good company I tell you," said another. “The music is quite good. Listen to the trombone in the jazz quartet.”
“I do not know the difference between the wind howling and wind instruments being played. Do glassblowers also like wind instruments? Do their glass blowing instruments produce sound? I know not the difference between a trombone, trumpet, flute or whatever you call them.”
"I was getting unnerved at looking at the same big drums of nostrils and pimples," said Oswald solemnly sending them laughing. "The way God made nostrils, noses and nose bridges is amazing. He loaded them on Thompson and denied that girl yonder any nostrils at all. Thomas you take Lion lager don't you?"
"Need you ask?" asked Thomas. "Thanks chum."
"We grew tired of looking at the green bottles, believe you me it isn't funny at all," suggested Thompson.
